Once upon a time mangoes were always sour and were ornamental fruits that came in varied colors. Impressed by the hospitality of a father-son duo, one day a guest offered them a sweet Mango. Both the father-son got fascinated by its color and delicious taste. So, they decide to grow more such fruits with that seed in their orchard. One day, they catch hold of a girl who was cursed by the God of Mangoes, stealing mangoes from the grove.

The book narrates how mango came to be known as the king of fruits and the existence of phrase – as delicious as mangoes. The story is woven to satiate the curiosity of young minds. Sudha Murthy has deftly intermingled the elements of fantasy, myth, and fiction. The expressive and vibrant illustrations add to the beauty of the prose. The narrative also imparts values such as kindness, forgiveness, gratitude, and humility. Murthy spins tales with charming simplicity, that makes you nostalgic about a phase in life. The story made me take a trip down memory lane to the time when I was a little girl gorging on mangoes and relishing pickles.

  • Sudha Murty’s use of simple language and use of Indian context makes the story easy to understand even for a 4.5 year old. I liked the ending of the book when the mangoes finally become sweet .

    Sudha murthy is one of my most favorite storyteller. I loved her simplicity. so far, my girls did not get a chance to read much of Indian author’s work. will surly pick this book for them during my India trip. I am sure they will love to read it.

    • Get the on kindle if you like. I am personally going paperless and prefer kindle and other book-reading apps. I buy hard copy only the ones i really like reading multiple times
