Happy Endings - Book review

Krish is the latest ‘it’ thing. The Indian-export, award-winning lesbian author, is being actively pursued by Bollywood’s darling Karan Raichand for movie rights to her Booker-nominated book.

But her past catches up to her on the 14-hour flight back to India when she’s seated next to Mahi, the woman who broke her heart ten years ago. Mahi, now Mahek Singh, is India’s #1 actress and Karan’s biggest star.

As old memories and anger resurface, Mahi and Krish have to contend with Bollywood glamour, interfering relatives, crazy fans, and zealous best friends, all of which complicate their already star-crossed relationship.

Traversing the past, present, and a hopeful future, can Krish move beyond her heartbreak? Will Mahi have to choose between her career and her love all over again?

Or will a second chance finally lead to happiness?

Book Review- Happy Endings by Minita Sanghvi

New York-based author Minita Sanghvi’s debut novel Happy Endings is an Indian LGBTQ love story, complete with a mix of all the right ingredients – parents, drama, glamour, love triangles, fight scenes, anger, and betrayal.

The book is about Krish (Krishna Mehra) an award-winning author and Mahi (Mahek Singh) a successful Bollywood actress. The story keeps traversing between the past and present, showing glimpses of their life as kids, teens, and lovers, till their family broke them apart. They lead their separate lives across continents and achieve success in their respective careers. Then, on a 14-hour flight from New York to India, as fate would have it, Krish is seated next to Mahi, the now famous Mahek Singh, India’s number one female actor and Karan Raichand’s biggest superstar – who broke Krish’s heart a decade ago. While Mahi is returning to Mumbai from a film shoot, Krish is going to India to accept an award at the Big B English Fiction awards ceremony.

The story revolves around, how they accepted the betrayal that happened a decade ago and after so many dramas they end up together again, forever #HappyEnding.

Overall Thoughts on the Book: Happy Endings by Minita Sanghvi

Happy Endings by Minita Sanghvi is one such book that has every flavor you’d like to read. About parents, drama, glamour, love triangles, fight scenes, anger, and betrayal, it has got everything. It’s a well-written story with keeps you hooked to curl up and finish it in one sitting. It’s some much-needed representation of the LGBTQ community and their struggles in the closet or after coming out.

This was my first time, reading a queer romance and it made me wonder why we as a society took so long to accept their love. LOVE IS LOVE and it, for sure, knows no boundaries in terms of race, religious beliefs, or gender. The way Krish would look at Mahi or the emotions, and love they share for each other would be exactly how a person in deep love would feel and share for their partner. I felt so terrible reading about the struggles of the LGBTQ community, and how ‘coming out’ affects their life and career. There is a lot, we as a society need to understand and work on, to be inclusive and be a part of making India a better place for everyone.

Definitely, a must-read book, hope there are more coming soon!

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

A queer love story with a happy ending but full of Bollywood masala, launch parties, scandals, unlimited twists and turns with sacrifices, evil mom, hot boyfriend, lovely girl-friends, peer fighting, going to the US, steamy romance, jealousy, confusion, and what not.
