Why it is important to moisturise baby for a softer and healthy skin?

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers
The sensitive baby skin is prone to extreme weather conditions and any dryness can eventually create a scally or chaffed skins. And moisturising baby skin is important to hydrate it and avoid chaffed lips, skin or dry cheeks. There was a time when grandparents and parents would proceed with a good oil massage to the baby. That was one of the only home remedies for baby skin care. But today time has changed and so does the baby care range. We have a variety of products in the market from the baby wash, baby moisturizer to baby lotions and creams. Hence, we always look forward to the best solution to moisturise baby skin.

Frankly speaking, I never tried any kind of cream or lotion for my little one for the fear of the chemicals present in them. I would give him a good oil massage every day before bath and once in the evening and that was it. His skin was soft and smooth at that time. Suddenly, things changed when he started to crawl, and his elbows and knees felt rough. Further due to winter, I noticed his cheeks turning reddish and itchy.

Like every parent, I wanted to keep my babies’ skin soft and adorable. I knew that it was time to change the way I moisturise my baby’s skin and start using a baby moisturizer.

Why the need to moisture the baby skin?

After discussion with my paediatrician, I understood that young kids do not have a fully developed barrier function. The barrier function helps to protect against all the harmful environmental factors. Also, the Baby skin is much active than any adult skin as it is constantly continuing to develop. Hence it is more vulnerable to irritants, changes in the temperature and humidity. Therefore, we need to protect our baby’s skin against a lot of environmental changes and harsh cleansers. And using a good baby moisturizer or cream after every bath not only helps in providing better hydration but also essential support for the body’s protective functions.

She recommended using SebaMed baby moisturising lotions and creams to moisturise baby skin. As all SebaMed products have a pH of 5.5, which is a worldwide accepted as a remedy for dry or sensitive baby skin. With the look of it they were expensive, so after talking to the paediatrician, I did some research back home. I was surprised to find the importance of the right pH level in baby creams and lotions.

Why is pH level so important in baby skin care?

PH level, moisturise baby skin,tuggunmommy.com

The pH level is a measure of acidity and is measured on the pH bar from 0 to 14. 0 indicates acidic and 14 indicating alkaline and the pH of water is 7 which is considered as neutral. Just like the normal body temperature is 37 degree Celsius, similarly, the normal pH value of the healthy skin is 5.5.

Babies are born with a pH value of 7. The acid mantle which protects the baby’s delicate skin takes up too 3 months to develop and then the pH of the skin then becomes 5.5.  And using products with pH value other than 5.5 can severely damage their sensitive skin.

While all the conventional body creams and lotions have a pH>7 and may contain parabens & propylene glycol which can cause skin irritation in babies. But only SebaMed products have a pH of 5.5 and contain natural lipids making them the best choice for sensitive baby skin and can be used from Day 1.

My Experience with SebaMed products

After reading all things good about the brand and the products, I ordered SebaMed Body Milk. As expected, it worked like a charm on my little one’s skin. After applying 2-3 times a day, the dryness and itching on his skin got reduced and kept it smooth for longer. It has an easy spreadability without leaving an oily layer. It is indeed a perfect baby care solution for moisturising baby skin throughout the year- summers and the mild winters we have here in Mumbai.

I have tried both SebaMed Baby Lotion and SebaMed Body Milk and quite liked the later. Both have similar ingredients and are helpful to moisturise baby skin in winter. The main difference between the Body Milk and the Body Lotion is their oil content. The body lotion has an oil content of 6% while the Body Milk is thicker with a higher oil content of 24%.  I found their Baby Body Milk best suited for Tuggu’s stressed and dry baby skin during all climate changes.

I personally love their products and highly recommend them to all. Hope the information is useful. Do let me know your comments.  If you find it useful, do share it with your family and friends as ‘Sharing is caring’.

Baby’s skin is 3 times softer and delicate than adults skin. It’s very important to maintain right pH balance for their skin.

  • We might not feel like but even a baby’s skin moistures it’s exposed to the touch, environment, water, soap etc. It can get several dry if left unmoisturized.
